Benign enlargement of the prostate can lead to incomplete emptying of the urinary bladder, nocturnal urination with nighttime dribbling, and PSA elevation.
With advancing age, the inner part of the prostate, which surrounds the urethra, usually enlarges. The consequences are incomplete emptying of the bladder, frequent urination and residual urine in the bladder, which can cause prostate infections. In addition, BPH causes an increase in PSA levels, which is important to detect / rule out carcinoma in the prostate.
For the treatment of benign enlargement of the prostate, there are now bloodless and minimally invasive procedures that are associated with a short hospital stay (1-2 days) and in some cases can even be performed to preserve ejaculation.

With advancing age, however, not only the prostate enlarges. It also increases the risk of developing prostate cancer. In order to exclude a tumor in the prostate or to determine the state of enlargement of the prostate, we recommend a special examination of the prostate with MRI (multiparametric, with endorectal coil and special MRI protocols).
